30 March 2019: In the Beginning

St Olave’s Church

Composers through the ages have been inspired by the idea of ‘the first and the last’ and this thread runs through the programme, including words from Genesis and Revelation interspersed with those for Holy Week and Easter in settings by Panufnik, Ferko and Pärt. The centrepiece is Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning, written in 1947. One of the longest continuous a cappella pieces ever written, it vividly sets the story of Creation for solo mezzo-soprano (Chloe Latchmore) and chorus. We begin with Dove’s I am the Day and conclude with James MacMillan’s stunning 2011 setting Alpha and Omega.
